L 1 Introduction to Pilates: Beginner’s 5-week course

with Clare Bannister

We run this course regularly throughout the year. This 5-week course is the perfect place to begin if you’re new to Pilates or have not practiced Pilates using the Pilates apparatus classes we offer at the studio: Reformer and Tower.

The course runs for 5 consecutive weeks. On the first 3 weeks of the course you will work on the Pilates Reformer. The Pilates Reformer is a great place to start as it provides feedback on body alignmnet and teaches you how to connect with the deep muscles of the core. You will learn some of the essential repertoire of exercises.

On week 4 and 5 we will work on the Pilates Tower and matwork. Practicing on all pieces of Pilates apparatus provides a depth, variety, and specificity of movement that simply cannot be replicated with just one piece, or with mat work alone. Pilates is not about individual exercises or apparatus, it’s about how you move. Practicing across apparatus ensures you achieve the basic principles of Pilates and will give you confidence to attend the full range of classes we offer at the studio.

On completion of the course you can start to attend the ‘Open level’ or ‘Open/beginners’ classes on the timetable.

Postnatal Pilates 5-week Course

with Clare

This is a small group course: Max 6 mums and babies. Each course will run for 5 consecutive weeks. The class is a mat/equipemnt based pilates class developed to help mum’s postnatal recovery. The Pilates method of exercise is the perfect way to help mum’s reconnect with their body, regain strength and support in the abdominal muscles and pelvic floor.

Each mum’s postnatal recovery is different. We would generally ask you to wait 6-8 weeks post delivery from a vaginal delivery and 10-12weeks post C-section, before attending the class. You way want to check with your midwife/doctor before starting exercise. We will check for Daistasis Recti (separation of the abdominal muscles) in the class.

Spring Revival: AnEquinox Rest-Shop

with Sophia Tupy.

Open yourself to deep relaxation and leave winter behind as we transition into springtime with this soothing rest-shop. Like a workshop, but with zero “work”, this extended session is designed to revive your nervous system and ready you for the longer days ahead after a proper rest.

Sophia will guide you through a gentle check-in and open up a discussion around our resistance to rest. This arrival will be followed by optional breathwork and nervous system regulation techniques, allowing you to find a greater sense of calm embodiment. Next, drop into longer-held, static poses: starting with peaceful yin yoga stretches then transitioning to restorative yoga with a focus on ultimate comfort. Finally, Sophia will guide you through a calming nidra meditation, a form of deep rest that will help restore both body and mind, leaving you refreshed and revitalised for the season ahead.

Time to prepare a fresh batch of Kimchi. It will sit in the back of my fridge developing flavour and all the fermented goodness for a healthy gut. Here’s a very quick. ‘How to’ ⬇️▫️I’ve used 4 small Chinese lettuce (approx 2kg) here, but you can always start with a smaller quantity and adjust the quantities.▫️Quarter and soak overnight in 200g of good quality salt and enough water to cover. ▫️Cover with a large plate and weigh it down.▫️Rinse.Combine all the following ingredients to coat the soaked cabbage:▫️200g Grated daikon radish/mooli▫️200g finely chopped leeks▫️200g Gochujang paste ▫️1-2 tsp salt▫️1tbs sugar▫️2 tbs fish sauce▫️1-2 bulbs of garlic crushed or grated▫️A 10cm piece of ginger (grated)I’d recommend wearing gloves to massage the above between all the leaves of the cabbage. Pack into sterilised jars. Don’t fill completely to the top or it will bubble up. Leave it out of the fridge for 24 hours. Enjoy after around 1 month. It will store in the fridge for quite a while and the flavour will become stronger as it ages. #KimchiRecipe #HealthyRecipes ... See MoreSee Less

Why train across all pieces of Pilates apparatus? We’ve been working a lot on control not momentum, and the tower can help us gain strength and control in exercises before taking them to the reformer. 🙌Using momentum to power through the exercise is not gaining strength and control, its building bad habits. The apparatus is here to work through the whole system of Pilates exercises building strength, control and mobility in the whole body. If you’ve just been practicing Pilates on the reformer you are missing so much of what the method can bring to your body. Working on our backstroke on the Tower means we can take it to the Reformer with strength and control, not momentum. #HighamsPark #TowerPilates #ReformerPilates ... See MoreSee Less
